Regenerative and Sports Medicine: Keeping Aging Athletes Strong and Pain-Free
As our population ages, longevity alone is not enough—we need to ensure that people live healthier, more active lives. While exercise is essential for maintaining health, the human body has its limits, and wear and tear are inevitable. Sports and Exercise Medicine, though still a young specialty in the local context, plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between aging and performance. Through exercise prescription and regenerative medicine, we can help individuals stay mobile, pain-free, and resilient.

Dr. Lim Baoying will explore how these medical advancements are transforming the way we care for active individuals, ensuring they continue to move and perform at their best, no matter their age.

The Silver Tsunami

Singapore’s ageing population, where nearly one in five citizens are 65 years or older today, will grow to represent almost 33% of all Singaporeans by 2035. The combination of high life expectancy and low fertility rates is triggering a demographic shift of a shrinking workforce struggling to support an aging population. This will significantly increase healthcare, social services, and living costs for the elderly and every Singaporean citizen.

Unfortunately, ageing reduces an individual’s capacity to continue contributing to the Singaporean society and economy, given how the passage of time is marked by key losses in biological status and functional capacity in four primary areas: musculoskeletal integrity, cardiovascular capacity, cognitive ability, and nutritional reserves. But here is where fitness and health practitioners hold immense value. Given our ability to improve quality of life within three of these four domains, trainers and coaches can align their skills and services to target this population to preserve functional capacities.

Given how losses in musculoskeletal strength are perhaps the most immediate and impactful to quality of life, they represent a primary goal in training this population. Perhaps it is time to rethink the way you train and retrain the way you think to cater to the needs of Singapore’s ageing population to preserve their quality of life.

Antioxidants and Health Promotion: Much More Than Vitamin C!

Oxidative stress is an inevitable part of life—and a powerful driver of aging, inflammation, and cellular damage. Oxidative stress is a normal physiologic response to various stressors. An imbalance in dietary intake of free radical scavenger molecules (“antioxidants”) as contrasted with oxidative stressors that may be encountered daily impacts overall health from a physical and cognitive standpoint, especially over a lifetime. Understanding oxidative stress and what free radical scavengers do is intrinsic to dietary programming for health, athletic recovery, longevity and more. One wonders, are all antioxidants are created equal? Have we discovered all of the dietary sources of antioxidants? This session challenges conventional thinking by moving beyond traditional antioxidants and exploring the cutting-edge science of reactive carbonyl species (RCS) and their role in oxidative damage. Additionally, the session will discuss how oxidative stress impacts immunity and whole-body inflammation, and why mitigating these factors are helpful for health and performance (physical and mental).’

Attendees will be introduced to 2-HOBA, a novel compound that doesn’t just neutralize free radicals, but addresses the root cause of oxidative stress by scavenging damaging RCS and supporting cellular resilience. This is a new approach to antioxidant support that could reshape the future of healthy aging and longevity.’

Importantly for athletes and strength-focused individuals, we’ll also explore how overtraining can contribute to elevated oxidative stress—and how targeted support like 2-HOBA may help reduce recovery time and improve long-term performance outcomes.

The Role of Dietary Protein in Body Composition, Longevity, and Athletic Performance

Over the past few years, we have witnessed a surge in the popularity of high-protein foods and diets, but for what reason? Recent and ongoing research on the benefits of increased dietary protein is no longer a staple of the athletic world. It demonstrates many benefits, including improved health, effective weight loss, and even preserving cognitive function.

This session dives into emerging research on protein intake, addressing quantity, timing, and protein type for all – to optimize health, functionality, weight loss, and athletic performance.

Coaching Strategies for Ageing Populations: Science-Driven Approaches for Strength, Mobility, and Longevity

As Singapore’s ageing population swells, coaches and trainers must shift their skill sets and services to tackle this booming cohort to help maintain their functional independence, autonomy, and overall quality of life. Ageing reduces an individual’s capacity to actively contribute to society and the economy, given losses in four primary areas: musculoskeletal integrity, cardiovascular capacity, cognitive ability, and nutritional reserves.

When working with older adults, we need greater awareness of the biological ageing process and its consequences. The workshop covers specific aspects of biological ageing, introduces key age-appropriate assessments, provides tools for effective communication with older adults, and introduces strategies to overcome any existing apprehensions, barriers, stereotypes, or negative perceptions towards an active lifestyle. Join this workshop to develop the knowledge and critical skills needed to coach older adults effectively.

Mastering Movement: Harnessing Unpredictable Resistance for Strength and Stability

In the evolving landscape of fitness training, unpredictable and dynamic resistance plays a crucial role in enhancing strength, stability, and movement efficiency. Mastering Movement: Harnessing Unpredictable Resistance for Strength and Stability explores the science behind training with live weights using aqua bags that challenge the body’s ability to react, adapt, and stabilize under constantly shifting loads.

Unlike traditional static weights, this form of resistance creates a continuously changing stimulus, activating deep stabilizing muscles, improving neuromuscular coordination, and enhancing proprioception. The need to control an unstable load refines reactive strength and movement mechanics, translating directly into improved athletic performance and functional strength for real-world activities.

The Art and Science of Muscle Preservation During Aging

Age-related muscle loss isn’t just a concern for the elderly—it’s a lifelong process that begins earlier than most realize and accelerates with time, especially under the strain of weight loss or inactivity. This masterclass explores the vital role of muscle health across the lifespan and dives deep into the science behind HMB (β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate) and vitamin D. Attendees will receive a comprehensive overview of the robust clinical research supporting HMB’s efficacy in preserving muscle mass, improving recovery, and maintaining physical function. In addition to HMB + D, this session will also highlight other synergistic combinations—such as HMB + creatine and HMB + protein—that further amplify muscle health outcomes and performance across a wide range of populations. Whether you’re working with aging adults, athletes, or individuals navigating metabolic shifts like GLP-1 therapy, this session provides practical strategies and science-backed insights to harness the power of HMB combinations across the lifecycle.
